One of the key figures in a drive to bring major investment to the North East will be the guest of honour at the Ward Hadaway Fastest 50 Awards ceremony next month.

Ed Twiddy, director at the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, will deliver the keynote speech at the event at BALTIC, the Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, on Friday, October 4.

In his role at the North East LEP, Mr Twiddy was instrumental in commissioning the review of the region’s economy by former Cabinet Minister Lord Adonis.

The subsequent Adonis Report has created a blueprint designed to drive the North East forward via investment in infrastructure, employment, skills and business.

Before becoming Director at the LEP in 2012, Ed was deputy director of local government and regional policy at the Treasury, a role which saw him help to shape the structure of the LEP network across the country and advise on issues such as Enterprise Zones.

Ed is no stranger to the North East, having studied at Durham University in the late 1980s and early 1990s and again between 1992 and 1995 for his PhD.

He then worked for consultancies attached to Durham University and has also worked for the UN and the Government in Iraq and on international boundary disputes in Arabia and Asia.

Speaking about his forthcoming appearance at the Ward Hadaway Fastest 50 Awards, Ed Twiddy said: “I am delighted to have been asked to give the keynote speech at what is an important occasion in the North East’s business calendar.

“The companies at the awards are the real standard-bearers for the region and are showing the way when it comes to creating jobs, prosperity and investment for the North East.

“The work which we at the LEP do is aimed at encouraging and developing exactly the same kind of entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude which is epitomised by those in the Fastest 50.

“I am looking forward to meeting representatives from this year’s list and to talking about the LEP’s exciting plans for the region.”

Colin Hewitt, Partner and Head of Commercial team at Fastest 50 organisers and sponsors Ward Hadaway, said: “Ed and his colleagues at the North East LEP are set to play an increasingly important role in the development of the region’s economy so we are delighted that he has accepted our invitation to be guest speaker for this year’s Ward Hadaway Fastest 50 Awards.

“His previous roles have given him an invaluable insight into Treasury thinking and how important decisions about funding and regional powers are made.

“I am sure the attendees at the awards will be very keen to hear what he has to say and his forthcoming appearance confirms the Fastest 50’s place as one of the key events in the North East business calendar.”

Ed Twiddy will join representatives of the region’s fastest growing companies and key members of the North-East business community at the Baltic next Friday to see awards given to the fastest growing small, medium and large companies in the region.

An overall award will also be handed to the North-East’s fastest growing business of the year.

The Fastest 50 rewards privately-owned companies and organisations which have shown the strongest sales growth over recent years and have generated profits for the same period.

It is sponsored and organised by leading North law firm Ward Hadaway and has become recognised as a key barometer of the region’s economy since the event was launched in 1998.
