Construction work is under way on new affordable houses in Northumberland, with the new homes expected to be ready for tenants by the autumn.
Isos Housing is building the £500,000 development of three-bedroom houses at Wydon Park in Hexham on the site of a children’s playground, which will be relocated and improved as part of the construction work.
The new homes, which feature front and back gardens and off road parking, will all be made available for affordable rent via Northumberland County Council’s Homefinder choice based lettings system.
The properties back on to a local area of green space - access to which will be maintained for the local community once the houses are built.
Vince Walsh, development and regeneration officer at Isos Housing, said: “There is a real shortage of affordable housing in Hexham which these new homes will go some way to address.
“It is exactly this type of family home which the town needs most so we are delighted that building work is now underway.
“Work on the new playground will begin once we have finished the houses. It will be significantly better than the existing playground with brand new equipment and we are sure it will more than meet the needs of local families.”
The four homes have been designed by HMH Architects, while construction work is being carried out by NB Clark of Morpeth.
All will be built to level three of the code for sustainable homes which means they are highly energy efficient.
Funding for the homes has come from a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA) Loan Guarantee Programme, as well as the proceeds of Isos home sales under the ‘right to acquire’ legislation.
The new homes at Wydon Park follow another recent investment by Isos, with a development of six family homes just finished at Hawthorn Court, off Radcliffe Road, on the Hexham East estate.
