The Institute of Directors North East has announced the winner of its Director of the Year Award 2014 at its annual Business Leaders’ Dinner.
Serial entrepreneur and business angel investor Alastair Waite, formerly a director at Onyx Group, Middlesbrough, and now founder director of Altrelli Limited, Osmotherley, has been crowned the leading North East director.
The aim of the award is to celebrate business leaders whose companies are making a significant contribution to the region’s economic success.

“The shortlist for this award demonstrated that the North East can be rest assured that there are talented, dynamic individuals, who have the ability to take the region forward commercially for the economic good of the area.”
Winner Alastair Waite is a qualified accountant with board level experience across diverse sectors such as retail, engineering, research and development, semiconductors, biofuels and information technology. He has raised almost every type of finance, opened overseas offices, bought and sold businesses, and completed a number of Management Buyouts.
Alastair has been involved in a number of North East businesses during the past 30 years.
He is majority owner of Altec Engineering Limited, based in Durham and employing more than 50 highly skilled people, he helped build Bede Group from University spin-out to a business that floated.
He is perhaps best known for leading the buyout of Onyx Group in 2001 and leading the growth and the development of the company resulting in a sale of the business in 2011 for £27m.
He left his position as strategic development director in November last year to focus on developing potential in his investment portfolio.
His investment portfolio of about 24 businesses are in even more diverse sectors with the common denominator that he likes the people in the businesses he invests in and believes in adding value.
He currently is founder director of Altrelli Limited, a consultancy business focused on helping businesses achieve their potential through development of strategy, business plans, fundraising, merger and acquisitions and mentoring.
