ANOTHER piece of chemical giant ICI’s Teesside operations is under new ownership
Intertek Group, a leading international provider of quality and safety services, has acquired ICI’s Measurement Science Group (MSG), which is based on Teesside.
All 42 current MSG staff will transfer to Intertek from ICI.
MSG operates at the Wilton Research and Development Centre, providing extensive measurement and consulting services to the chemical, polymer, pharmaceutical and related industries in Europe and across the globe.
ICI has awarded a four-year outsourcing contract to Intertek as part of the agreement.
And bosses were today holding a launch event of Intertek MSG at Wilton. MSG expands Intertek services by introducing new expertise and advanced measurement capabilities for polymers and plastics, composite materials, surface coatings, and adhesives.
Intertek’s senior vice president for analytical services, Dr Andrew Swift, said: “MSG is a ‘hand in glove’ fit with our expanding network of advanced analytical service and consulting operations, adding important new skills and technical capability into some of Intertek’s fastest growing market sectors.
“We are delighted to be entering into a global science and technical support relationship with ICI.”
Graeme Armstrong, ICI senior vice president, technology, said: “Measurement science is critical for fulfilling ICI’s Technology strategy. Through our ongoing partnership with Intertek MSG, we will have access to the best possible combination of skills available to support our needs, now and into the future.”
Dutch chemical group Akzo Nobel agreed am £8bn takeover of ICI earlier this year. The deal is expected to be completed on January 2.
Today’s news means ICI now employs about 50 staff on Teesside. In the 1960s it employed about 30,000 people in the area.
As part of the wider and international network of Intertek laboratories, MSG will continue to provide key services to ICI Global Research and Development operations. MSG becomes Intertek’s flagship Technology Centre for pioneering measurement services into new areas of growth, including nanotechnology, medical devices, intelligent packaging, advanced coatings and micro-electronics.
