A company that specialises in working in hazardous environments has reached a safety milestone after more than 10 million hours were worked without a major accident.

Hertel, which has 1,000 staff based in the region, last had an accident resulting in lost working time in January 2012.

The company provides a range of services, including access solutions such as scaffolding, insulation, corrosion protection, mechanical, civils and allied specialist services.

Most of the Middlesbrough-based employees work in hazardous environments such as oil and gas refineries, chemical plants and nuclear sites, where safe working practices are crucial.

David Fitzsimons, Hertel UK and Ireland’s managing director, said: “I am proud of the team’s safety landmark.

“While we should rightly celebrate all of these achievements, we must recognise that we have to continue to focus on maintaining the highest standards. Safe working is at the forefront of everything that we do.”
