The Sunderland-based Hays Travel continues to show confidence in the high street with further expansion in the region being planned before Christmas.
After its acquisition of the south’s largest independent travel agency, Bath Travel, in October the company intends to open a new shop next month.
Hays retail and training director at Jane Schumm, said: “I’m delighted to announce the opening of a new shop in Hexham, Northumberland, in December. The shop is yet another example of our faith in the future of the retail market and we have even more expansion in the pipeline.
“We feel this is a natural progression of our North East branches and that the expansion will strengthen and bolster our street presence in an increased area.”
Established in 1980, Hays Travel grew from humble beginnings, with managing director John Hays founding it in the back of his mother’s childrenswear shop in Seaham, County Durham.
Most of its retail presence remains within the North East, but the company also has several shops in the North West and some as far south as Sheffield.
The majority of its growth had been organic until the acquisition of Bath Travel, which saw it take on a further 60 branches. It now has a turnover of more than £520m and employs over 800 people.
The company is recruiting for travel consultant positions within the new shop on Hexham’s Fore Street.
