Workers at a major Sunderland manufacturing company are on course for healthier lives following the reintroduction of a fitness initiative.

A visit to Grundfos by health trainers from South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust last year proved so popular with staff that a team has returned to the company to stage a free 12-week course.

The health trainers carry out an initial health and lifestyle assessment before the programme starts, a mini health check which includes measuring height, weight and checking blood pressure, diet, and cholesterol and BMI levels.

A personalised health plan is then devised for everyone on the programme.

Michael McKenzie, production supervisor at Grundfos’s Castletown site, said: “Last year there were about 70 signed up for the programme and I know dozens have done so this year too. One of the company’s slogans is ‘Happy, Healthy, Here’ and courses like this help us support that vision.

“During the course you keep a food diary and then the trainers talk to you about your diet and give you healthier options if necessary.”
