A family-run flooring company has expanded its business with a second store.

Doors & Floors Direct Limited was set up three years ago by husband and wife team, Kevin and Samantha Scott at a small unit in Blaydon Trade Park, Gateshead.

Kevin, 42, had worked in the timber business for 12 years before deciding to start up his own firm following redundancy. The business set-up costs were funded by his wife’s redundancy a couple of months earlier.

With a growing list of suppliers and contacts between them – as well as family ready and willing to help out – setting up the business wasn’t too difficult for the couple.

The firm, which now employs four full-time members of staff, generated £1m in sales for the year ending October 2011, and now the business is breaking even with its latest accounts due out.

Kevin of Springwell Village, Gateshead, said: “My father-in-law Maurice offered a helping hand in April 2010 when we decided to open the shop, three years later and he is still helping… five days a week.”

Kevin runs the new store in Whitley Road, Benton with Scott Mason, who he has known for more than 15 years, while his wife and in-laws run the Blaydon store, alongside Neil Howard, who joined in August 2010. Kevin and Neil had worked together previously.

In July 2012, Richie Raine joined as driver/warehouseman, followed by Anthony Sanderson in sales in February 2013. Both stores stock flooring, doors and accessories.

Samantha, also 42, said: “We are hoping that we can increase turnover between five and 10 per cent over the next year.

“While there are no plans to open a third shop yet, moving forward we aim to increase the range of flooring and doors we offer, hopefully take on more staff and we are now moving on with our staircase displays too, which are proving a huge success.”
