intu Eldon Square has announced a big increase in charity fundraising during the festive season.

Every year, the Newcastle shopping centre offers charity and community groups in the North East the chance to promote their organisations and raise funds via public donations as a thank-you for providing carol singing and musical entertainment during the Christmas period.

December 2013 saw a 40% increase in funds raised, with a total of £35,046 donated compared to £25,186 in the previous December. Forty-one charities were involved in fundraising activity, and the biggest hitters turned out to be Marie Curie Cancer Care (£2,959) Newcastle’s Rotary Club (£3,081) and the Salvation Army, who raised an amazing £6,000.

The Children’s Foundation, who collected £1,247 from carol singing groups, raised an extra £2,700 from their gift-wrapping unit provided by intu Eldon Square for the fifth year running.

Libby Nolan, Fundraising Manager for The Children’s Foundation, said: “Raising almost £4,000 this year with activity in intu Eldon Square is absolutely amazing! We are very grateful to the management team for giving us this opportunity and also thank both retailers and the general public for their continued support. In addition, this year we got extra support from big hearted accountancy firm Leathers LLP who funded our wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and the more mundane but equally essential sellotape!”
