An entrepreneur is creating an exercise buzz with the launch of a Newcastle city centre gym with a difference – the first of its kind in the UK.
German Gonzalez, 38, worked with start-up company TEDCO Business Support to launch his futuristic venture at the Kern Fitness Studio in the railway arches behind central station, creating two new jobs in the process.
Originally from Mexico, German settled in the North East over three years ago to work in the industrial engineering field, but switched to the fitness industry after discovering a growing new trend in fitness training using electro-muscular-stimulation (EMS) to improve sporting results and performance.
EMS involves wearing a special vest whilst working out with a personal trainer to electrically stimulate certain muscle groups during exercise via electrodes attached to the skin.
A low frequency current produces better results in a shorter period of time, thanks to the greater stimulation of muscles at a deeper level.
Mr Gonzalez said this means users can see the same results from one dedicated session to those they’d see from working out two or three times a week, and the fitness regime can help in losing weight, muscular toning, cardiovascular fitness or rehabilitation from a previous injury.
He said: “The Kern Fitness ethos is to fuse new technology with proven training methods to get the ultimate results for our clients in the quickest time and improve the wellbeing of our customers.
“We concentrate heavily on the personal training side of our offering to ensure that EMS adds the right kind of value in what we can help our clients to achieve.
“I’m excited to be the first person to be bringing this kind of studio concept to the UK although the EMS workout is fast-becoming a real fitness revolution in other parts of the world.
“In Germany, over 250 similar studios have opened in the past few years on top of close to 25 opening in Spain in the past 12 months.
“It’s clear that EMS exercise is a training method growing in popularity and we’re thrilled that Newcastle will be one of the first locations in the UK to offer EMS technology during fitness training.”
Mr Gonzalez worked closely with TEDCO Business Support to develop the Kern Fitness idea into a business enterprise and was assigned a business advisor through the RGF-funded Start and Grow programme.
Start and Grow is delivered by TEDCO in the North East to help new enterprises get up and running and develop new employment opportunities in the private sector. In all, £30,000 was invested in the venture.
Bill Hartshorne was the TEDCO business advisor who worked with Mt Gonzalez on creating Kern Fitness.
Mr Hartshorne added: “German has a sound business understanding and very much believed in the technology and the results it can offer from day one.
“His passion in bringing this to the UK was infectious and having tried the equipment myself, his research into the concept has served him well.
“I would expect the Kern Fitness brand to develop even further as the technology gathers momentum and we look forward to seeing the company expand into new locations in the future. “
Kern Fitness joins a growing list of successful businesses in the railway arch community, which includes restaurants Herb Garden and Sausage Emporium and Newcastle’s first micro pub The Split Chimp.
