Three of the region’s best-known family businesses are in the running for a major award.

Morpeth-based garage equipment supplier Gott Technical Services will be up against clothing company J. Barbour and Sons Ltd, of South Shields, and the Gateshead-headquartered Helen McArdle Care for the title of Northern Family Business of the Year at the Family Business United national awards ceremony.

The annual event, held in London in June, is run by magazine for the family business sector, Family Business United, and is aimed at promoting the achievements of family-run firms.

The winners of each regional category will be determined by a judging panel made up of experts.

Gott Technical Services director Ian Gott, who is currently looking at expanding his firm’s service area, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for such a credible award, especially alongside the strong calibre of businesses in the running.

“We’re also the only garage equipment supplier to make the cut so we’re hoping to rally as much support in the industry for our nomination. We’re proud to be a family business and the family ideal is still very much at the heart of what we do.”

Family Business United founder and awards organiser Paul Andrews said: “The awards are a chance to recognise the contribution that family businesses make to the economy, identifying those that excel in their field of work and it’s great to have such a variation in the shortlists.”
