A major investment to drive growth has earned Express Engineering a top honour in its field.

The Tyneside-based Oil and Gas division of the business picked up the Global Export prize at the annual Subsea UK Awards.

The success follows a six-year, £12m investment programme, which has seen the company’s turnover more than double to £45m and direct exports almost treble to £19m. Overall, about 90% of production is now used overseas.

Last year the business broke into the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list, which monitors the UK’s fastest growing, privately owned operations.

It was also placed 52nd in the International Track league table for exports.

Group chief executive, Nigel Davison: “It is always nice to receive recognition for the improvements we make and so to do so at arguably the most prestigious awards ceremony in the subsea sector is great news.

“Export is the lifeblood of our business. We have invested heavily in our equipment, processes and people, networking and building relationships in all of the global oil and gas hubs.

“We’ve increased capacity and improved scheduling systems to co-ordinate the activity and logistics of complex full turnkey projects - enabling smooth and seamless deliveries all over the world.

“Consistently excellent performance, including on time delivery, quality and technical engineering support, has resulted in multiple global supply agreements with our key accounts.

“We now have a firmly established operation In Brazil and are seeking to replicate this model, through tried and tested technology transfer, in other regions.”

Since its launch 41 years ago, Express Engineering has grown to become one of the UK’s leading sub contracted manufacturing companies.

From its 290,000 sq. ft. facilities on the Team Valley Industrial Estate on Tyneside, Stokesley in North Yorkshire and Sao Paolo in Brazil, a workforce of almost 500 supplies precision engineering services to the aerospace, defence, sub sea oil and gas exploration and production, power generation and medical equipment sectors.

New markets to open up for the company following recent investment include Angola, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Singapore and the USA.

The Subsea UK Awards coincided with Europe’s largest annual subsea exhibition and conference, Subsea Expo, which took place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC).

They are aimed at highlighting the achievements of individuals and companies throughout the subsea industry, bring together peers in mutual celebration of the UK’s leading position on the global stage.
