Express Engineering has made the shortlist for the third Private Business Awards, sponsored by PwC in association with HSBC Private Bank.

The Gateshead manufacturer is through to the national awards for Employer of the Year, whittled down from 700. Formed in 1973 as a precision engineering and tool-making firm, it is now a global group.

It supplies the oil and gas market with a wide range of integrated precision machined components, turnkey supply and fully assembled, tested products.

PwC Newcastle senior partner Paul Woolston said: “The high number of nominations for this year demonstrates the quality of Express Engineering in making the shortlist and it is great that it has been recognised in helping the region to grow and be successful.”

Also up for Private Business of the Year – won last year by JCB – are Dr Martens, Euromonitor International, Logson Group and Walkers Shortbread. HSBC Private Bank (UK) MD Charlie Hoffman said: “Private business deserves a bigger voice in the UK as a successful generator of new business opportunities.

“We need to celebrate and showcase the sector’s innovation, optimism and success and these awards are unique in the UK as the only national awards to do this.” Winners are announced on September 11.
