Independent contractor Esh Group has acquired a 51% stake in an innovative environmental technology firm, as part of plans to be able to deliver a full service range to brownfield development sites.

The County Durham company, which provides construction and related services to the public and private sectors, has paid a six-figure sum for the controlling stake in Remedios, a University of Aberdeen spin-out which is at the forefront of the brownfield remediation business.

Where companies plan to develop land that may be contaminated, Remedios assists in the stages that may be required prior to planning consent, helping to identify pollutants, whether they are liquids, solids, vapours or gases, and then developing strategies, using innovative software.

The remediation work is vital for developers needing to ascertain the best potential uses for brownfield land, and Remedios use unique environmental biosensor technology to help do that.

Brian Manning, chief executive of Esh Group, which has an annual turnover of £150m and employs around 1,000 people, said: “Our acquisition of Remedios enables Esh Group to widen its diverse offering to existing and new customers throughout the construction sector.

“We can now deliver a full service range to brownfield development sites: desktop appraisals; site investigations; quantitative risk assessments; determination of clean-up targets; clean-up itself; putting in the infrastructure; constructing the structures or building; and delivering proactive and reactive maintenance services to the occupant thereafter.

“We believe this acquisition highlights Esh Group’s forward-looking approach, expanding into new ventures that complement existing Group activities.”

Other shareholders of Remedios include Gavin Black who has been involved with the business from the outset as a shareholder and director and who is Remedios’ chairman.

Black said: “Remedios has tremendous potential in the brownfield remediation sector. We have demonstrated up to 50% remediation cost savings against conventional processes – and substantially quicker times to construction development work commencing.

“We are delighted we are working with Esh Group and its construction companies. With Esh Group’s access to market expertise we can fulfil Remedios’ potential – building on our many years’ experience.”
