The chief executive of Durham County Cricket Club (DCCC) is venturing into new business territory, having bought a North East wine school.

David Harker, a former winner of the Journal’s Businessman of the Year award, takes over Newcastle Wine School from Jesmond businessman Chris Powell.

The school was the first to be set up as part of Powell’s national wine education franchise network, localwineschool.com, which now has 13 venues throughout the UK and is set for expansion into foreign markets.

Harker, a wine enthusiast who has completed his Wine and Spirit Education Trust Diploma, said: “I feel hugely proud to have played a part in the achievements of DCCC, and I felt that this year was the right time to look for a new challenge.

“When the opportunity arose to turn my passion for wine into a career, it was just too exciting to pass up.”

He added that he wished to grow the company’s specialist corporate wine events service, and would be running a range of other courses and tastings.
