AN electronics company based in Cramlington has invested £100,000 in a new production line that will help it meet a £1m increase in sales.

AN electronics company based in Cramlington has invested £100,000 in a new production line that will help it meet a £1m increase in sales.

Opsol UK hopes to see its revenues grow to £2.5m this year and the new production line has increased the firm’s capacity to produce circuit boards, which it supplies to customers in the UK.

The company, set up in 2002, has invested more than £500,000 in manufacturing equipment in the past three years and moved to larger premises in Admiral Business Park in 2010.

It won 12 new clients last year and Opsol aims to continue attracting UK clients who tend to look abroad for the same services and products. The new investment allows Opsol to compete with companies in China.

Owner Malcolm Humble said: “My initial investment between 2008 and 2010 was right in the middle of the recession, but was critical in preparing Opsol for better times.

“In the last 18 to 24 months we have seen two or three of our competitors go into liquidation and others making redundancies, in the same period we have more than doubled in size, we must be doing something right.”

He credited the success down to investing in training the firm’s staff of around 20. It has funded office manager Jennifer Tait through a part-time degree in Business Leadership at Northumbria University.

Other members of the team are studying for NVQs and the company has set up its own training centre to train shop floor staff to international standards.

The company has not confirmed if any new jobs will be created as a result of the new production line but Humble said: “We are currently looking at possibilities to train new staff. We like to give young people the opportunity but we need to find the right people with the right attitude.

“We are constantly keeping our eyes open for young people looking for an opportunity to learn new skills and work in a well disciplined way.

“Far too often we hear people saying their company or business has a skills shortage, but skills can be taught, its finding young people with the right attitude that can be difficult”
