A Consett solicitor has been elected the 188th president of the Newcastle Law Society.

Verity Dobbie is the managing partner at Swinburne Snowball and Jackson, where she specialises in family law. She is the first Consett practitioner and only the fourth woman to lead the society, which represents around 1000 members from Durham to Berwick.

“It’s a great honour and a privilege to represent my colleagues in what are very challenging times,” Dobbie said. “The legal profession is going through a period of incredible change with alternate business structures, the dramatic removal of legal aid and the growth of technology coupled with the general economic climate all representing serious threats to the traditional high street solicitor’s practice. Despite this, I am optimistic about the future.”

Micky Macgregor, of Hexham firm Gibson and Co, is vice-president, with Mark Harrison, of Ben Hoare Bell, Gateshead, his deputy.
