Cancer Research UK is set to receive a four-figure cash boost, thanks to a year-long fundraising effort by staff at a Newcastle fund management firm.

A team of 22 workers at NEL Fund Managers adopted the organisation as its dedicated charity for 2006 and, after totting up the money raised from various events held through the year, a total of £2,702 has been given to the charity.

Fundraising activities included a 10-strong group in the Race For Life at Gateshead's Saltwell Park, an abseil off the Tyne Bridge by ex-marketing assistant Karen Redfearn and a successful first Great North Run by senior investment administrator Donna Hedley.

Chief executive Barrie Hensby, below, said: "We polled everyone to find out which charity they wanted to raise money for, and Cancer Research UK was a very popular choice."

Margaret Robinson, Cancer Research UK community fundraising manager, said: "It's thanks to support like this that our scientists, doctors and nurses are able to go on making progress in the fight against cancer."
