SCOTS GAP July 9

Hexham  & Northern Marts at their Scots Gap Centre sold 510 prime Lambs and Cast Sheep at their weekly sale. As with other centres earlier in the week, there was a sharp drop in trade to average 42kg and £71.40 Per Head.

As part of the sale a number of consignors had donated a lamb to be sold on behalf of Hedley Heron’s Countrywide Charity Cycle ride in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance. Thanks to the generosity of local farmers and butchers alike well over £1200 was raised for this worthy cause with the highlight being two lambs at 51kg sold for £100 per head, well above the trade and purchased by Ben Gray for Meat Wholesalers, Messrs Traves, York.

Lambs were purchased by butchers from across the North East who wished to support the effort and top-quality lamb from ‘The Gap’ will be available next week from Hugh Thompson Butcher, Bellingham; WMH Farm Fresh Meats, Haydon Bridge; Greens of Longframlington and East Knitsley Farm Shop, Consett.

Besides the charity lambs, the sale was topped by Clive Nixon, Stotsfold for Texel crosses at £86. A great run of 140 lambs were brought forward by Messrs Walby, East House Farm and these topped at 184.5ppkg.

Harrison  & Hetherington Ltd had forward 463 head of cattle at their weekly Wednesday sale at Borderway, comprising of 231 Store and Weanling Cattle, 228 Calves and 2 Dairy Cattle.

Great Yorkshire Show week resulted in a smaller show of cattle, however once again buyers were plentiful in every ring, trade was sharper and many more could have been sold.Store Cattle – A decent show of store cattle were forward at the weekly sale whereby all classes sold dearer on the week. Top overall was for a superb run of Charolais cross steers from Messrs Faulder, Sceughmire, Great Orton achieving £1300 with their 10 bullocks averaging £1271. Heifers peaked at £1145 for yet again a Charolais cross from vendor Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Irthington. Finally black and whites were very easily sold and topped at £805 twice for Holsteins from Messrs Hall, Kelsick House, Abbeytown. Vendors should take advantage of the good trade being achieved whilst the shortage of cattle numbers are evident.

Trade was outstanding from the offset leaving all vendors delighted with both beef bred bulls and heifers averaging well over £300 and black and whites in good demand.
