A North East company has been named one of the best in the country after carrying off a prostigious national award.
A-Belco, which manufactures explosion-proof electrical equipment in Ashington, Northumberland, scooped the Achievements in International Business honour at the 2014 British Chambers of Commerce Business Awards.
The firm, which also makes industrial enclosures, control stations, industrial plugs, sockets and combination units for the control and distribution of electrical power, qualified for the competition by winning the North East Exporter Award, run by the North East Chamber of Commerce, earlier this year.
Brian Trench CEO of A-Belco, said: “We have worked incredibly hard in recent years to break new ground in exports by establishing a network of distributors throughout Europe, USA, Australia, UAE, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
“For that to be recognised at a national level is a fantastic achievement for everyone associated with A-Belco and cements our reputation as a blue-chip supplier to our growing list of customers.”
The company also manufactures electrical equipment switchgear for industrial, rail, and infrastructure applications, with customers ranging from the oil, gas and petrochemical industries to power stations, pharmaceutical, marine and transport industries.
Sales have increased from £3m in 2010 to £10m by 2014, with product revenue rising by 30% in the last year alone.
In 2010 the company developed a pioneering floodlight for the oil and gas industry, which allowed it to expand exports in many new territories.
North East Chamber of Commerce chief executive James Ramsbotham, said: “It is fantastic to see such an innovative, forward-thinking company as A-Belco winning this prestigious award.
“We took an incredibly strong delegation of businesses down to the capital and all should be congratulated for representing the region with real distinction at the UK’s premier business awards.”
A-Belco was joined by The Bazaar Group, Derwentside Homes, the Castlegate Centre, JC Atkinson and Nobia at the BCC Awards.
