Plans for an Earl Grey-themed bar wrapped around Grey’s Monument are...well, a load of rubbish, of course.

An impressive artist’s impression of Club Monument - a supposed bar being proposed at Grey’s Monument by Newcastle pub chain the Vaulkhard Group - were, of course, an April Fool.

That means there were will be no Earl Grey-themed cocktails (we particularly liked the sound of the Great Reform Act) and we have to confess to that we made up the organisation called Tyneside Against Modernism and Cardigan Grey, chairman of the Earl Grey Society.

“I don’t think Earl Grey would be happy with this proposal, after all he was ‘tea’ total,” said reader Steve Ellwood, while bonnylad said: “I know its April Fool’s Day but don’t give the council any ideas like this no matter how daft they are!”

Club Monument appears to have fooled no-one but amused most of you. Worryingly, we got a few phone calls about real stories which people thought were April Fools...
