Newcastle & Gateshead - Architecture and Heritage by Thomas Faulkner, Peter Peacock and Paul Jones updates the sell-out 2006 edition issued by Tyne Bridge Publishing, the publishing arm of Newcastle Libraries.
The book takes the reader on an architectural journey from the medieval St Andrew’s Church in Newcastle up to the present day, with around 20 new buildings from the last decade added to the new edition.
The buildings selected as the best of the last 10 years are drawn heavily from the education sector, with three alone from Newcastle University, one from Northumbria, two at Newcastle College, plus a new secondary school in Gateshead.
Also highlighted are the re-use of older buildings - including Coopers Studios, i6 Charlotte Square and Generator Studios - two buildings at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital and a private house built by husband-and-wife architects.
The book’s publishers say that “the years since the beginning of the 21st century have witnessed one of the most architecturally exciting periods in the area’s history”, reflected in the selection of new buildings.
