Store Lambs – Hexham and Northern Marts held their weekly sale of 389 Store Lambs, achieving an overall average of £63.11.
A very smart show of light lambs nor being as strong on the week. Trade however was on par with last week’s high rates.
Topping the sale was a pen of well-bred Texel lambs consigned by M/s D & KM Dickinson, Chattlehope realising £72. More could have been sold to vendors’ advantage as a bursting ringside of purchasers ensured producers went home smiling.

A young British Blue Bull from I F & C M Herring & Son, Halnaby Farm topped the males selling for 178ppk and an impressive 12 year old Limousin Bull from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts reached the days highest gross price of £1178. Barton Rose Holsteins, Richmond had the highest priced Dairy Cow at £1062 and top price per kilo for a Black and White was 130ppk achieved by both H Gibb & Son, Eachwick Red House and A R & C Booth, Village Farm.

Store cattle - In contrast to last week we witnessed a wonderful show of quality cattle this week. In particular the steers stood out and a very smart British Blue from regular consignors C R Raine & Son, Stanhope Gate led the way when the 14 month old sold to W Swinbank & Sons for £1260, the same home had a 9 month old steer at £1010 and managed to top the heifers with 10 month old’s at £875 and £870. Four other consignors sold steers well over the £1000 barrier as quality cattle from Bluestone Farm, Manor Farm, Humbleton Farm and Low West House all contributed to an overall average well over £900 throughout the steers. Runs of 9 to 12 month old suckler bred young bulls also met a much improved trade, British Blue’s from T & G Lee, East Crane Row and Limousin’s from J & S E Bainbridge, Dousgill regulary sold from £780 to £880. The only Cow and Calf offered by C Moffettt, Bacandsides Farm did not disappoint as the Limousin with her Bull Calf at foot sold to W Swinbank & Sons, Greystones Farm for £1320.

Sheep - Ahead of next week’s opening sale of store and breeding sheep a dribble of stores appeared this week and sold to an impressive £71 a peice. Lambs through the live weight collection this week were topped by some lovely Beltex/Texel Cross Lambs from W & V Burton, West Common Top Farm which clung onto the flying trade we saw last Thursday selling for 190ppk.

An excellent show of 24 breeding cattle on offer from Messrs JW & ES Woodmass, Howard House, which were a dispersal of cows and calves. This outstanding run of cattle attracted a wide range of keen bidders and met a flying trade, averaging £1638.89 for 2nd calvers onwards. The top price was £2400 for an 8 year old British Blue Cow with a Limousin bull calf soon followed at £2300 for a similar outfit.

New season lambs averaged 1.82p per kg (-1p on the week) and sold to £96, top price 2.02p per kg for Texel. Ewes averaged £62, and sold to £109 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £80, Light ewes sold to £78 for GF and averaged £55.
