Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers` Mart had forward 26 prime cattle, 45 otm cattle, 3 young bulls, 5,961 cast ewes & rams and 3,099 prime hoggs.

Prime steers to 207.5p for Limousin from Low Hallburn. Prime heifers to 224.5p for Limousin from Wyseby Hill Cottage. Young bulls to 160.5p for Black & White from Woodslee. OTMs to 163.5p for Limousin from Nunscleugh.

Prime hoggs to £109 per head for Texels from Yatesfield and to 274p per kilo for Texels from Keith Farm. Heavy ewes to £133 for Texels from Howgillside. Light ewes to £56 for Cheviots for Pityot. Rams to £108 for Texels from Haithwaite.

Steers: medium to 207.5p (193.6p); heavy to 168.5p (168.5p). Heifers: light to 224.5p (206.6p); medium to 217.5p (203.6p); heavy to 203.5p (186.9p). Young bulls 160.5p (153.1p).

Hoggs: light to 207.0p (173.0p); standard to 274.0p (197.3p); medium to 224.0p (186.3p); heavy to 195.0p (169.5p). Ewes: light to £56.00 (£39.77); heavy to £133.00 (£59.11). Cast Rams £108.00 (£62.10).

Hopes Auction Co, held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 68 Cattle, 21 Bulls, and 981 Prime Sheep and 112 Ewes.

The finished beef industry is in turmoil as excess product combines with very limited demand, producing uneven requirements. However, today’s trade for clean cattle 10p/kg in front of last year and this must be taken as a positive for future consumption.

The top price of 249.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer from A J Wood, Woodhall Brow Farm, Dean. The top price per head for heifers was £1511.05 for a Blonde which was shown by D A Harrison, The Old Vicarage.

Steers sold to a top price of 225.5p for a Limousin shown by G W Mitchell, Grassknop Farm and purchased by MJ Wharton, Wholesale Meats, Wigton. Top price of £1432.86 was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.

Bulls sold to a top of 223.5p paid to Messrs G Wilkinson, Arkleby House for a Limousin. The top price per head was £1396.50 paid for a Limousin Bull shown by T A Byers, Ellen Bank, Boltongate.

Over Thirty Months cattle sold to 193.5p per kg paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by D A Harrison, The Old Vicarage.

Hoggs - Just short of 1,000 today and trade sharper with the biggest increases for the more commercial export hoggs 180-190p per kg. Better demand for strong hoggs with all types 50 kgs plus making £83 and upwards. Best Beltex sorts 240p plus.

The top price per head was £130 paid to Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge for Beltex Hoggs which also reached the top pence per kg honours making 317.1p.
