Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of young calves with a larger entry of 348 calves forward. Black and whites were an excellent trade with calves being noticeably dearer than previous weeks.

A top price of £555 was achieved twice for Limousin Bull calves from RG & W Whitfield, Balladoyle Farm, Silloth. Heifers topped at £460 for a pure Limousin from TW Hutchinson, Bail Hill, Barnard Castle. Continental calves were in general slightly back on last week’s excellent trade.

Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 59 store cattle & 10 breeding cattle at their fortnightly sale.

A mixed show of store cattle forward sold to a slightly improved trade with many more required to satisfy a busy ring of buyers.

The sale was topped at £805 (x3) for Whitebred Shorthorn bullocks from Whitbysteads Hill Farms.

Others to £800 for a British Blue shown by G.W. Dinnin, Nether Albie. British Blue heifers sold to £745 (x2) from H.R.C. McCulloch & Co., Kilmichael.

A small show of breeding cattle sold to a similar trade, topping the sale was a Limousin in calf cow selling to £1,020 from W. Hodgson, Blindhillbush.

BERWICK

w/e July 11

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 142 Prime Cattle including 36 Cows; 2,019 Prime Lambs including 516 Small Lambs (Ewe Lambs); 391 Cast Ewes and 88 Store and Breeding Cattle.

Aberdeen Angus Cross Heifers from South Farm, Newcastle upon Tyne sold to 370p per kg to Well Hung & Tender, Berwick upon Tweed.

Export Lambs from Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso sold to £94.50 for Continental Crosses with Texel Crosses from Cherrytrees, Yetholm selling to £93.50. Quality Suffolk Crosses from Easington Grange, Belford and Outerston, Corbridge sold to £92.40

Breeding Cattle sold extremely well with Limousin Cross Cows & Calves selling to £1,800 and £1,460 for mixed ages. Aberdeen Angus Bulls sold to £3,000.
