Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock at Borderway Mart.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Once again an increasing entry of 465 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward with yet again more new buyers coming to take advantage of the large show of 288 cast cows and stock bulls with trade being again dearer on the week.

Messrs Hewson of Burgh Head Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow selling for 734kg 204.5p £1501 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Smith and Shepherd of Glebelands cows topped at 189.5p for a British Blue cross purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Mr Steven Illingworth of Howgillside sold a Limousin cow for 187.5p to Mr David Barker.

Messrs Ridley of Haltcliffe sold the top-priced Limousin cow selling for 785kg 170.5p £1338 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Corlett of Skiddaw View sold a Limousin cross cow for 172.5p to Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Mr Hall of Ainstable Hall run of run of cows topped at 172.5p(x2) to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Thompson of Horsegills sold the top-priced Holstein cross cow selling for 146.5p to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Bays Leap Dairy Farm run of outstanding Holstein cross cows topped at 840kg 131.5p £1104 and 862kg 127.5p £1099 both purchased by Dawn Meats. Messrs Knight of Low Meadows sold the top-priced Limousin Stock Bull selling for 1085kg 142.5p £1546 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Mather of Beech Bank sold the top-priced British Blue cross bull selling for 158.5p to Mr Shaun McGimpsey.

Prime Cattle – An increased entry of 53 Prime cattle were forward at the weekly sale with all classes selling to an increased demand and were definitely sharper to sell. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross steer from Mr D Anderson, Crosby House Farm, Maryport achieving £1678.75 and top overall heifer was a superb continental cross from Messrs JS & JO Dodd, West View, Penrith, achieving £1470.73 also gaining top overall pence per kilo with another cross heifer of 222.5p whilst top pence per kilo steer also came from Mr D Anderson, achieving 212.5p for a Limousin cross. All of the above purchased by weekly purchasers Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Prime Bulls – Once again another large show of 118 prime bulls were forward with trade being similar to last week. Top grossing bull was a Simmental from Messrs DC Houldey of Kirtleton House, Lockerbie achieving £1526.84, top pence per kilo was for weekly vendors Messrs Story of Jacksonrigg, Longtown achieving 209.5ppk for a British Blue cross. Finally dairy bred bulls were forward in large numbers again and topped at £1006.50 for a British Friesian from Messrs CD & WA Bland & Son of The Flatt, How Mill and top pence per kilo was 153.5ppk for again a British Friesian from Messrs Hogg of Whitehead Hill, Cumwhitton.

Prime Sheep

The weekly sale of prime sheep had forward a good show of 1797 prime lambs and 231 cast ewes. Prime Lambs – A number of new vendors made the trip with prime lambs and were rewarded with a very pleasing trade. The overall average of 217.7ppk was achieved, which equates to £89.13 per head, this compares very favourably to other markets operating today.

Topping the sale both per head and per kilo was a truly outstanding pen of 12 Texel cross lambs shown by Messrs JA & LA Thompson of Woodhead, Scaleby weighing 38.5kg, they sold to £119.80 to Bowood Yorkshire Lamb Ltd, which averages out at 311ppk. Messrs Thompson 37 head consignment averaged 39.4kg, 286ppk or £113.29.
