Civil engineering firm the Owen Pugh Group has appointed a group commercial director to oversee all commercial activity across the organisation.
Jonathan Grant, from Chopwell, Gateshead, has joined the company in the newly-created role with responsibility for leading the development of the group’s long-term strategy in relation to corporate performance, finance and acquisition.
Owen Pugh, which is headquartered in Dudley in North Tyneside, with four other sites throughout the North East, comprises six trading arms which undertake earthmoving and demolition, drainage and groundworks, plant hire and haulage, quarrying, inert waste and drain cleaning, and CCTV surveys among its core services.
Mr Grant joins Owen Pugh having spent almost 15 years in main contracting following a spell in private practice. He has held roles at Stephen Easten, Tolent Construction, Brims Construction Ltd and more recently at Willmott Dixon Construction, initially as a senior surveyor progressing to North East commercial manager.
In these roles he achieved a wealth of commercial management experience including management of risk, liability, finance, negotiations and legal issues.
Mr Grant, who has achieved degrees in both geography and quantity surveying, said: “The basis and training I received across each of these businesses was fantastic and really drilled home the importance of our North East supply chain within the construction industry.”
In his role as group commercial director he will encourage and implement greater efficiencies and, in turn, successes across the group with overall responsibility for strengthening the commercial process from preconstruction through to project delivery.
He added: “Owen Pugh has an absolutely solid and well-established commercial foundation and my appointment provides an exciting and very realistic challenge to further enhance the group’s good commercial practice into the industry’s best.

Owen Pugh has experienced significant growth since 2005 with turnover and employee numbers more than doubling to £37m and 422 respectively for the year ending March 2014.

Mr Grant is North East born and bred is married with three children aged four, nine and 11. Originally from High Spen, he studied at Hookergate Comprehensive School and Northumbria University.
