Lydia McCaslin completed a degree in medical microbiology before converting to a legal career.

A specialist in wills, trusts and probate, she is now heading the team at BHP’s Newcastle office having recently returned to the region after a year in Australia.

A member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Lydia’s expertise covers inheritance tax planning and powers of attorney as well as the administration of estates.

She worked for a number of well-known law firms in the North East and Cumbria before spending a year in Perth, where her husband, a surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, was offered a fellowship.

“We’re working towards expanding the department in Newcastle, which is all about meeting people and working with professional advisers to share our expertise. BHP Law is renowned for being a family firm with breadth and depth of experience, which is especially important in this area of law,” Lydia explained.

She is encouraging people to make a will and put their affairs in order.

Lydia said: “It makes things much easier and clearer for their families if something should happen to them, especially if their family is complex.”
