Newcastle NE1 Ltd, the Business Improvement District (Bid) company for Newcastle city centre, has strengthened its board with communications director Stephen Patterson.
Stephen, 36, has played a pivotal role in NE1 Ltd since its formation in 2007 and was part of the original team that established the Bid, the largest in Europe at the time of its launch.
Over the past seven years Stephen has been responsible for delivering a number of key initiatives in NE1 that have shaped the development of Newcastle city centre and boosted the local economy, including the introduction of NE1’s Alive after Five initiative that introduced permanent late-night opening until 8pm in the city centre, supported by heavyweight marketing support and free car parking after 5pm.
Commenting on the appointment, Bid chief executive Sean Bullick said: “Stephen’s appointment to the board is an acknowledgement of the important contribution he has made to NE1 and the projects delivered across a wide range of NE1’s business operations.
Stephen added: “I’m delighted to have been appointed to NE1’s board – we are entering an exciting period in NE1’s business development having secured a second term. The renewal ballot gave us a resounding vote of confidence with a 67% voter turnout and an overwhelming majority of 78% of businesses voting to back the Bid.
“It is testament to the important role NE1 has played in Newcastle that the city has fared so well and continues to thrive during a period of unprecedented economic depression. We are now entering a period of significant change in local governance, which make the conditions in which we operate more challenging whilst also providing more opportunities. I’m delighted that I’m now in a position to shape the direction NE1 follows.”
